What does it mean to be aesthetically brilliant behind the casting lens? If you’re a model or have had the luxury of meeting Andrew Weir, casting director and founder of ACW Worldwide, then you know exactly what I am referring to. If not you’re about to find out! Get ready because the aesthetic brilliance is about to be unleashed!
It’s only a few days before fashion week, the show is scheduled, but the models still need to be booked. Andrew Weir is perfectly poised in his talent, signature shades, and the kind of cool that one has to be present in order to understand. Hundreds of models fill the Mondrian Soho Luxury Hotel this past Saturday to audition for Weir at the much anticipated casting call; dressed in eclectic outfits of short shorts, miniskirts, and all sorts of leather showcasing their statuesque desires to walk the runway. I sit next to him on the other side of the table, and can’t help but notice how every model is approached as if she’s the ‘first model’ Weir’s seen all day. Whether she’s a familiar face that he’s worked with or a brand new girl from Russia, Ukraine, Jamaica, Denmark or any stream of our grandiose universe, during her moment of audition the spotlight is on her and her craft as a model.
Unless it’s a familiar face, Weir usually opens up with “where are you from” before “go ahead and walk for me.” It’s only natural that every aspiring girl hopes that he will close with “gorge …….just gorgeous.” Which is quite often the case.
Spending a day with Andrew Weir, one quickly notices a visual mastermind who knows what he’s looking for, identifies opportunities and discovers the hidden gems in the masses of models. It’s no surprise that he’s one of the most coveted casting directors in the industry, wanted by many, booked by the lucky few.
After all, one really has to have a trained vision to spot the next “big” thing. He looks at the model, studies her face for a few quick seconds, instructing her to pull her long locks into a bun to examine the periphery of unique beauty that brought her to his table to begin with.
The aesthetic lineup is confirmed as we get ready for the glam that is Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week: Spring 2014!
